DIFFICULTIES FOR THE SPIRIT-FILLED The main point I have been trying to make throughout these pages is the absolutely essential need to have the Holy Spirit to help you correctly understand what God is doing around you. Without the Holy Spirit, you will not only miss what God is doing, but it will probably so offend you that you will become an enemy of God's work! You would think, then, that if someone had the Holy Spirit, that they would surely be capable of discerning the movings and stirrings of our Lord. Tragically, such is not the case. It seems almost inevitable that someone mightily filled with the Holy Spirit in the past grows so accustomed to their particular method or message, that they lose the mental flexibility to adapt to any new changes in God's plans, processes or procedures: "And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, he pours new wine into new wineskins." Mark 2:22 Old wineskins used to be new wineskins, which in their day contained new wine. But over a period of time, the wine aged and so did the skins, until the freshness had left them. If you have been a Christian for a long period of time, or belong to an old, well-established denomination, then you are in danger of having "lost your fizz." |
