Cigarette Wilson

Back in 1889
Cigarette Wilson
had a vision of the poor
making too many babies
and raising them
to be box boys
for old Tom and Jerry cartoons.

Concerned,
he sold his six shooter Guiche shoes
for a slot machine
and said goodbye
to New York’s astonishment
and headed West.

89,000 cigarettes later
he reached the obsessed poor
who lost their money
to his machine
like fishermen fly-fishing with
plastic flies in a dry lake.

Having a cosmic plan,
the poor got poorer
and their children
made commercials
about Indian beer
and their grandchildren
set up sawmills and schools
and fast foods
and invented the subway.

Later,
a casino will be built on Saturn
and Cigarette Wilson
will run the place
like a pay toilet among the stars.
