Duck Lake, Utah

You don’t expect people
to die there,
only small birds playing a water casino,
where every coin in the bullrush slot
is a shot gun dealer
paying off with blistering pellets
in hunting season.

Humans aren’t supposed to have
a hunting season,
just a quiet expiration
like an overdue library book,
and all you get is a folded paper notice
in the mail
announcing a fine of 25 cents a day.

If I had my way, I would own
all the books in the world,
and I would let the ducks float free
on the cool beautiful waters
of Duck Lake, Utah.
