Lake Woman

You were such an inviting lake:
Cool waters waiting for a swimmer
so when I parted the flowering bushes
and saw your spring‑splashed beauty
I knew that you were meant for me.

I quickly stripped myself and took a loving leap,
eager to be nude in your summer waters
but when I dove beneath the pleasing surface
of who you are,
I found a freezing heart.

It is so shocking
I can't get out of you fast enough.
Now I am shivering naked on the scratchy shore,
absolutely frightened
at my thirsty love for you.
